What the N214 road roller test covers
The subjects below come from the NPORS learning outcomes for N214, not from Ray. NPORS is a plant operator card scheme and its training and testing follow course objectives drawn from the National Occupational Standards, see NPORS testing. NPORS and CPCS are separate card schemes. This page covers the NPORS category N214 only.
Every machine category in the NPORS learning outcomes covers the same ground: safety law and the operator’s duties, the manufacturer’s handbook, main parts and controls, PPE, pre-use and running checks and reporting defects, getting on and off, starting, stopping and travelling, checks of the work area, the work itself, loading and unloading for transport and shutting down and making the machine secure.
For N214 road roller, the NPORS outcomes add two category-specific subjects.
### Direction of compaction
Direction of compaction is which way the roller travels over the material being compacted for the job in hand.
### Working near edges
Working near edges is working close to the edge of a surface, a drop or soft ground.

Experienced on a roller, or new to it
The right route depends on how much time the operator has already spent on a road roller, and Ray will talk it through on the phone. Which NPORS card an operator ends up with, traditional, CSCS red or CSCS blue, is set by NPORS scheme rules, not by Ray.
