What the N016 micro excavator test covers
NPORS testing follows published learning outcomes. They set out the subjects covered, drawn from the National Occupational Standards. For an overview of NPORS routes, see NPORS testing.
Every machine category in the NPORS learning outcomes covers the same core subjects: safety law and operator duties, the manufacturer’s handbook, the main parts and controls, PPE, pre-use and running checks and reporting defects, getting on and off, starting, stopping and travelling, checks of the work area, the work itself, loading and unloading for transport, and shutting down and making the machine secure.
For N016, the outcomes add excavator subjects:
- Checks before digging, meaning the checks made in the work area before excavation starts
- Placing spoil, meaning where excavated material is put once it is out of the ground
- Keeping different materials apart, meaning separating what comes out of the ground rather than mixing it
- Loading lorries, meaning loading excavated material into a lorry
- Changing buckets, meaning taking one bucket off and putting another on
The published outcomes do not go into micro-excavator-only detail beyond these excavator subjects, so Ray will confirm exactly what the assessment covers on your own machine and attachments when you call.
How to book your micro excavator test
Tell Ray whether the operator is new to the machine and needs a novice course, or already operates it and needs an experienced worker test. Ray also tests operators renewing a card, sorting out an expired card or adding N016 to an existing card.
