Ray Walters, an NPORS plant machinery assessor, carries out loading shovel assessments at your premises on your own machine, anywhere in the UK. He is based in Northampton, on the M1 in the middle of England.
On-site NPORS assessments on your premises, anywhere in the UK.
Ray operated plant in construction, groundworks, waste and recycling, scrap metal and general industry before becoming an assessor.
Ray travels to your site from Northampton in the middle of England.
NPORS publishes learning outcomes that set out the subjects covered for each category. They say what is covered, not how an operator is marked, so this page describes subjects only.
Every machine category in the NPORS learning outcomes covers the same core subjects, including safety law and the operator’s duties, the manufacturer’s handbook, the main parts and controls, PPE, pre-use and running checks and reporting defects, getting on and off, starting, stopping and travelling, checks of the work area, loading and unloading the machine for transport and shutting down and making the machine secure.
### Subjects specific to the loading shovel
These three subjects are the loading shovel work itself, and they are what separates N209 from the other NPORS categories.
Loading vehicles. Using the loading shovel to load material into a vehicle.
Placing and securing the load. Where the load is put down, and making sure it is secure.
Working with a banksman. Taking direction from the person on the ground who is guiding the machine.
The outcomes list the subjects, not the exact tasks or site set-up used on the day, so Ray will confirm what your N209 assessment covers on your machine and your site when you call.
Loading shovels are used in construction, groundworks, waste and recycling, scrap metal and general industry, the sectors Ray worked in before becoming an assessor.
Ray carries out every assessment himself. Read about Ray.
If you already operate a loading shovel at work, ask Ray about the experienced worker test. If you are new to the machine, ask about the novice course. Which NPORS card follows, the traditional card or the CSCS red or blue card, is explained on the certification page. Those are NPORS’s rules, not a promise from Ray.
For an operator with real experience on a loading shovel, carried out on your site on your own machine and covering the NPORS subjects for the category. This suits a first card, a renewal, sorting an expired card or adding N209 to an existing card.
For someone new to the loading shovel. Two of the comments further down this page came from candidates on a novice loading shovel course.
Call 07984 357997 and say it is N209 loading shovel, where the site is, how many operators and whether it is a first card, a renewal, an expired card or adding a category.
Ray confirms what is needed on the day, including the loading shovel, room to work and the site arrangements.
Ray comes to your premises and carries out the assessment on your own machine.
The application and the card that follows are covered by NPORS’s rules, not by Ray. Ask Ray about the route when you call.
These are the machines and duties that often sit alongside a loading shovel when material is being loaded, moved and tipped on the same site.

Call Ray first. He covers the whole UK from Northampton and tests on your own loading shovel at your premises. If you have more than one operator to test, call and talk it through.
