Ray Walters is an NPORS plant machinery assessor and carries out the NPORS N027 excavation marshal and banksperson test on your own site, anywhere in the UK. He is based in Northampton, on the M1 in the middle of England.
Assessments on your own premises, on your own machines.
Ray Walters carries out every assessment himself.
Before becoming an assessor, Ray spent over 20 years operating plant in construction, groundworks, waste and recycling, scrap metal and general industry.
NPORS publish learning outcomes that list the subjects covered, not how a candidate is marked. The common core includes safety law and the duties of the role, the manufacturer’s handbook, PPE, checks of the work area, the work itself, reporting problems, and shutting down and making the machine secure; parts of it are written around operating a machine, so Ray will confirm what applies to an excavation marshal and banksperson.
Excavation risks. The risks that come with an open excavation and working around it.
Buried services. Finding and avoiding the cables and pipes under the ground, before the dig starts and while it is underway. On site these are usually just called services.
Electric shock. The danger from buried electrical cables, which NPORS list as a subject of its own.
Ray will confirm exactly what the assessment covers for your site and the excavation work you do, and which NPORS document applies.
Ray offers experienced worker tests and novice courses. Which one you need depends on whether you already do the job, or you are starting from scratch.
For people who already work around excavations and need the N027 ticket to match. Call Ray and he will say which route fits.
For people new to the role who need training before the assessment. Call Ray and talk through your starting point and what the job involves.
NPORS have a traditional card and two CSCS card routes, a red Trained Operator card and a blue Competent Operator card. NPORS issue cards and set the rules.
You deal with Ray directly.
Say where the site is, how many people need N027 and whether it is an experienced worker test or a novice course.
Talk through the site set-up and the excavation work involved. Ray will tell you what is needed on the day.
Ray travels to your premises and carries out the assessment there.
NPORS issue the card. Ray explains what happens next and what you need to do.
The machine that digs the excavation, so the marshal and the operator work as a pair.
For moving spoil and materials away from the excavation area.
For guiding machines around the site and setting up exclusion zones near the dig.
NPORS call this ‘N402 Slinger / Signaller’. Used where loads are lifted into or out of the excavation.
